The History of Easter
Easter is observed by the churches of the West
on the first Sunday following the full moon that occurs on or following the
Spring time (March 21st). Easter became a "movable" feast which can occur as
early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th.
Easter was believed by some legends that it came from the Scandinavian "Ostra"
and the Teutonic "Ostern" or "Eastre", both Goddesses of mythology
signifying spring and fertility whose festival was celebrated on the day of the
vernal equinox (Spring time). The Hare and the Rabbit were the most fertile
animals known and they served as symbols of the new life during the Spring
season. The Easter symbol of bunny seemed to be original in Germany, where it
was first mentioned in some German writings in the 1500s. The first edible
Easter bunnies were made of pastry and sugar in Germany during the early
1800s.
The Easter bunny was introduced to American folklore by the German
settlers who arrived in the Pennsylvania Dutch country during the 1700s. The
arrival of the "Oschter Haws" was considered as a childhood's greatest
pleasure next to a visit from Christ-Kindel on Christmas Eve. The children
believed that if they were good, the "Oschter Haws" would lay a nest of colored
eggs.
In Christian beliefs, Easter is to be celebrated as the religious
holiday representing the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The
Holy Week and the Lent end with Easter Sunday, the day of Jesus
Christ's resurrection. On the other hand, the celebrations of Easter have many
customs and legends that are pagan in origin and have nothing to do with
Christianity.
